Western Dairy has re-invigourated dairy traineeship opportunities in WA through the National Centre for Dairy Education Australia (NCDEA).  In addition to the traineeships available through Farm Information Services, Great Southern Institute of Technology has recently partnered with the NCDEA to offer their first ever Dairy Traineeships in WA.

Although Albany-based, Great Southern Institute is servicing the entire south west dairy region, with ten trainees currently enrolled. The traineeship concept works like an apprenticeship, where the employer/supervisor provides most of the training in the workplace, however this is strongly supported by TAFE or a private training provider. Trainees will also attend a few scheduled group training sessions with other trainees to develop their knowledge and enhance their on-farm training. A Registered Training Provider issues the qualification – either a Certificate II or Certificate III in Agriculture (Dairy Production) – which should be achieved over the 12 months.

Trainees must be paid at least award wages including minimum conditions of employment, but will be required to pay normal tuition fees. Employers may be eligible for Government financial incentive payments – which can facilitate a situation where the employer pays for the trainees formal training. Dairy Trainees are also eligible to apply for the Tools for your Trade payments of up to $1600 for Certificate II and $3800 for Certificate III. They may also be eligible for a Living Away From Home Allowance and additional payments in some cases.
